Unhappy Power Steering Fluid Showing on the VDO

I have a 1992 E34. The VDO is telling me to go to the owners manual for a "Power Steering Fluid" message. Unfortunatly, I do not have the owners manual. I have serviced the car and reset the service. The power steering res. is full and the fluid looks clean and there are no appearent effects on the machanical functioning of the steering. It does make a slight pump cavitation noise.

Try bleeding the system. Turn from stop to stop SLOWLY and don't hold at the stops for more than 3 secs. Do that a couple of times then recheck your fluid level.

I've tried bleeding the system when I replaced the brakes and rotors. I have found that not to help. I have looked at the schematics and do not understand what type of sensor is causing the VDO to display. I have seen suction hoses pull air into a hydraulic system without an external leak and I am beginning to think this may be the issue, but as stated previously, how is the ECM being told there is an issue? Pressure, Suction, or a float switch?

Does your car have the self leveling rear shocks? According to a friend in BMW NA, he mentioned that would show on the VDO if there is a leak or low fluid condition on cars w/ self leveling rear shocks.
