so mullet, what is your major?(tis ok im an engineer as well )

I would give American car engineers more credit if every American car my family has owned wasn't broken within five years ( all bought brand new, btw). We only own BMW's now and haven't had a problem (unlike the entire transmission that literally broke while we were 1000 miles from home, thanks GM).

Anyway, I'm double majoring in Architectural and Civil Engineering with an emphasis in Construction Management. You?

^^heh every American car we have had was the same way...I will never buy one. All European for me (unless it is an old American car..like an old caddy or something but even then I would probably buy an old European car instead.)

I know they're manufactured by GM; I don't know whether they're designed by them.

okay, because if GM designs them then mullet's point (and all points about american engineering) is...well, pointless.

As far as I know, they were off-the-shelf type of trannies that GM had already designedt, with BMW simply buying from GM.

GM's plant in France also produces a 5 spd steptronic tranny used in some E46's. Threre's a lot of talk on web forums that ZF and Getrag are made by GM, and I used to think that was true. But they are, in fact German, and ZF in particular manufactured the transmissions in the Panzer tanks of WWII.

Did the tranny from a 2000 Chevy Venture come from there?

From where? The 2000 Chevy venture used a 4T65-E GM tranny: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/GM_4T60-E_transmission
