Registry security cannot happen. M$ write to registry defense (redirect write/edit to registry keys to storage directory in the new Vista Beta) fails to address key deletion. Lack of drivers to many internal components limit Unix/Linux OS replacement to only a handful of notebooks. Net result leaves only the Apple line to consider.

Get an Apple.. you will NOT regret it.. Ive had my powerbook for over 2 years without any problems. BOth of my roommates have sent their stupid POS compaqs and toshibas in about 3-4 times. And now theyre broken for good without any kind of warranty. Spend the extra couple dollars and get something thats worth it in the long run.

BTW WINDOWS SUCKS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Unless you love running virus scans every day

well, I just to a MIS495 (Management Information Systems)-technology type class, and the teacher told all 60 of us to buy laptops at...

techbargins.com

She said they have cheap, good, fast, laptop computers there.

She bought 10 laptops and sold them all on eBay and made $200/laptop.

And, if I were to get one, I would get an Apple Powerbook G4, or a Dell Laptop XPS M170 or M140.

Well, the choice boils down to do you wanna play endless rounds of this?
When W32.Blackmal.E@mm is executed, it performs the following actions:

Copies itself as one of the following files:

%Windir%\Rundll16.exe
%System%\scanregw.exe
%System%\Winzip.exe
%System%\Update.exe
%System%\WINZIP_TMP.EXE
%System%\SAMPLE.ZIP
%System%\New WinZip File.exe
movies.exe
Zipped Files.exe

Note:
%Windir% is a variable that refers to the Windows installation folder. By default, this is C:\Windows or C:\Winnt.
%System% is a variable that refers to the System folder. By default this is C:\Windows\System (Windows 95/98/Me), C:\Winnt\System32 (Windows NT/2000), or C:\Windows\System32 (Windows XP).

Creates an empty .zip file using the same file name as the worm itself in the %System% folder. It then opens this file in order to hide its functionality.

Adds the value:

"ScanRegistry" = "scanregw.exe /scan"

to the following registry subkey:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion\Run

so that it runs every time Windows starts.

Modifies the values:

"WebView" = "0"
"ShowSuperHidden" = "0"

in the registry subkey:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curre ntVersion\Explorer\Advanced

Modifies the value:

"FullPath" = "0"

in the registry subkey:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curre ntVersion\Explorer\CabinetState

Modifies registry entries found under the following registry subkey:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\Licenses

Deletes the following files:

%ProgramFiles%\DAP\*.dll
%ProgramFiles%\BearShare\*.dll
%ProgramFiles%\Symantec\LiveUpdate\*.*
%ProgramFiles%\Symantec\Common Files\Symantec Shared\*.*
%ProgramFiles%\Norton AntiVirus\*.exe
%ProgramFiles%\Alwil Software\Avast4\*.exe
%ProgramFiles%\McAfee.com\VSO\*.exe
%ProgramFiles%\McAfee.com\Agent\*.*
%ProgramFiles%\McAfee.com\shared\*.*
%ProgramFiles%\Trend Micro\PC-cillin 2002\*.exe
%ProgramFiles%\Trend Micro\PC-cillin 2003\*.exe
%ProgramFiles%\Trend Micro\Internet Security\*.exe
%ProgramFiles%\NavNT\*.exe
%ProgramFiles%\Morpheus\*.dll
%ProgramFiles%\Kaspersky Lab\Kaspersky Anti-Virus Personal\*.ppl
%ProgramFiles%\Kaspersky Lab\Kaspersky Anti-Virus Personal\*.exe
%ProgramFiles%\Grisoft\AVG7\*.dll
%ProgramFiles%\TREND MICRO\OfficeScan\*.dll
%ProgramFiles%\Trend Micro\OfficeScan Client\*.exe
%ProgramFiles%\LimeWire\LimeWire 4.2.6\LimeWire.jar

Note: %ProgramFiles% is a variable that refers to the program files folder. By default, this is C:\Program Files.

as seen from Norton's site

If you get an apple get the extended warranty, they break all the time. (go ahead start flaming) We have a large selection of apple crap here and without the extended warranty you end up with paperweights very quickly.

Personally I have a toshiba and a dell. I like them but I hardly use them. And yes viruses can happen. But you usually have to do something stupid to begin with. So don't do anything stupid. Yes run a good antivrus. But I can fix a system with a virus. Try to remove the power supply in a g5

(for those who don't know. Remove the cover, remove the processors (you need a special 8" p1 screwdriver, which apple won't sell you, and a special 8" hex which oddly you can pick up but you usually don't have on hand), remove the board, say a magical spell, and the power supply comes out(we hope), bitch because it all doesn't go back together again and fling it from a rooftop)

The application situation did get better since it is all freebsd now and ports does work to a certain extent. Networking works better but it isn't seemless yet.

So you can scream from the highest mountain that the registry will be the downfall of windows, and I might even be inclined to agree with you. But I can't recommend apple for reliability, I mean if you want reliability, and security go sparc with netbsd.

Go with SGI for the win! Ha ha I joke. We have about half a dozen Onyx's, Indigo's, etc. laying around in our shop. Some worth half a million back in the day, now we can't even pay someone to take them away.
