^^good question....

my buddy had an E30 when we were in high school and his parents always insisted on taking it to the dealership. The dealerhip probably didn't even know how to work on it as well as a specialist shop would

I alway thought that was good. Plus I am not paying for the repairs since the accident wasn't my fault.

For my upcoming work (installing my M3 rear diffuser july) that I have planned and when i fix my hood next month I will definately take my car somewhere else.

I bet in NY the insurance company would rather you take it to the dealership to make sure that it gets done right the first time becuase I am sure that there are many many shady shops in the area. I bet a lot of shops would seriously destroy your car.

yeah in NYc I always see....shops that work on cars in the middle of the sidewalk or out on the street...I mean like a heavy traffic/ pedestrian busy street where people are walking by the cars as some mech is under the hood or under the car replacing parts....

and all he has to do is take a bathroom break and someone goes into your car and steals your radio or piss in your seats....
it happens...

^^Didn't know that...New york have that kind of workshop.I thought they have have to follow ISO standard. Here, workshops are unorganized like u said,"work on the street." and a common sight..hehe.
Only proper shop is the dealer. That's why i sent my car only to the dealer.BTW how many BMW dealers are there in NYC?here's it's only one for the whole country.....

Nah. The only thing they have to do is befriend a few cops. Those kind of shops are rampant here in NY/NJ. And the crazies around here will do more than piss on your seats . . he he, that's why I never eat at buffet restaurants

In the NYC area they are two: BMW Of Manhattan and Life Quality BMW in Brooklyn.
There are about 2 or 3 more in New Jersey and 2 more out in Long Island, NY and 1 Upstate NY in Mt. Kisco!

When I say work in the streets...I mean most Automechanic shops in NYC are usually found in old Manufacturing/Industrial neighborhoods that are now not really good neighborhoods. So there is no law against this. Usually they do it because of lack of space inside trhe garage. I don't mind a guy working on my car in the middle of the day...but at night the usually store your car on the sidewalk in such a neighborhood. That doesn't fly with me.
