Those of you with an E36, E38 and E39 will be all to familiar with the Oil Service lights on your dash. Most people are not aware that the lights countdown based on mileage and are not appropriate indicators of when you should get your oil changed. From full green bars, to the yellow/red indicators is approximatley 25,000 kms. That is way, way to long to change the oil. However, every 5,000km or so you encounter one simple problem. How do I reset the oil light? Well I used to just take my E36 to the dealership and if they weren't busy they would do it for me. This gets tiring, and a Peake Research light reset tool is $150, so what to do?
Well I heard about, and decided to purchase this. It's an OBD Oil Service Light reset tool. It looks quite simple, because it is. I paid less then $15 for this off EBay. I ordered it on the 12th of September and it arrived October 4th.
It says for years 1982 to 2001, and I can't confirm that, but it should work for any standard 20 pin connector.
How it works:
1. Plug into OBD port under the hood.
2. Turn ignition on to Position #2.
3. Press and hold the Oil or Inspection Button. Hold the button until the light goes out.
Now you will see your oil light will be all green again!
For $15 this was absolutely worth it. It looks to be decently well made. It won't get much use so I expect it to last a while. It is quite simple and can be easily used by one person. I am quite happy with it for the cost. Shipping was about fair as it came from China by standard post.
Should anyone need, I will be happy to loan it out to someone in the Calgary area.
