A few overheating questions
I have a 1998 528i that is running hot ONLY sitting still. Say picking up lunch at a fast food drive thru. If I have the AC I have to turn the car off if it takes any time at all, but one back on the road temp return to normal. My questions are should my cooling fan run only when the AC is on? If I had air in the system wouldn’t it run hot all the time? Is there a test for a faulty fan switch? Thanks in advance
If its only overheating when sitting still then it's most likely that your fan clutch has worn out. When it fails the fan spins freely and doesn't pull air in to cool off the engine. A good way to test this is take a small newspaper or flyer and roll it up. Then with the car running slowly insert the newspaper into the spinning fan blades. Do this slowly and carefully so you don't snap a fan blade. If the paper stops the fan then your fan clutch needs to be replaced.
