1995 525i trans trouble

I am new to the forum and like this web site. I have been looking for posts related to transmission problems and have found a few. The trouble that I have is slightly different than others, that the car is shifting hard as a brick. It also wants to stay in high gear when coming to a stop. I can manually go through the gears and it shifts fine. Could this be some speed sensor? I think it has three. Is there any one sensor that goes bad before the others? How do you diagnose? I have had older E30's but all have been manual transmissions with no problems. If I have to replace the transmission is there any glitches I need to look for by converting it to a five or six speed?

Could be a valve body, or a sensor. Can you get it scanned for codes?

Thanks for getting back with me. it has been a really busy week and no time to play with the hooptie. I have an OBD II reader but nothing for OBD I. I am "skeeerd" to take it to a transmission shop. I will see if I can have it read sometime this week. No dash check lights are on fire. I am used to the old school american muscle but have recently become addicted to these bimmers. One thing I have quickly learned is do not throw parts at them, it can get costly.
thanks bob g.

Take it to a reputable beemer shop. It's worth paying a little extra for someone with experience. You could have a Hydromatic or a ZF depending on equipment, have someone who knows get eyes on it and tell you what they found

i think it may be electrical. i can start the car in any gear. is there any one thing that could be the culprit? could it be the shift selector? since i figured out you could start it in any gear i noticed that the shift selector would move smoothly with no "real definition" between the positions. can you put an aftermarket shift selector in these cars or do i need to stick with OEM?

thanks again for your help

took the hoopty to the local tech school. found a couple of codes gear monitoring trouble code 100, select lever position trouble code 23, kick down switch trouble code 30. i do not want to just throw parts at the car should i begin with the start interlock relay?

If it starts in any gear and has no definition between shift points (in the trans or at the lever?). I'd be looking at the selector lever. Previous owners sometimes have habit of neglecting to handle things like spilled soda etc.

I took the neutral safety switch out and cleaned it as best as i could. it still starts in any gear. does the "brain" think the car is in park or neutral? it will also start without the neutral safety switch or the (M/A) switch hooked up. i am assuming this hybrid set up is over ridden by the manual shift linkage (or it may go into reverse while driving). at initial take off the car progresses from a lower gear (assuming 1st) then shifts extremely hard into high gear. are there electronics on the transmission that i can look at as well?

After replacing the neutral safety switch and the manual/auto switch the car has not shifted out of the normal operating mode. i still have a problem with it being able to start in any gear. does anyone think that it could be a speed sensor.
