Question HELP e46 getting hot hi all newbie here

hi all can anyone please help me ive just got a v reg 316i se and have developed a problem it is getting hot there is no thermostat in it ive just replaced the water pump with new one the old one was in pieces when removed extracted all bits i could find in hole for water pump ive since found the heater matrix to be bypassed top hose leaking when hot cooler on bottom hose then top fan runs constantly ive only just taxed and motd it now cant use would i be better of converting to diesel or bigger engine if so which would be best and cheapest and what engine would fit the easiest any advice would be greatfuly rieceved and put to good use and maybe stop the wife moaning about getting a recked car or do i leave the car and get rid of it please help me many thanx wayne
