^^^ all data networks are like that. its not a scam, thats the way it is. the reason is data network deployment. . .

as with any purchase, research is key.

BT isnt really for data transfer on the scale of magnitude of web browsing, email etc. its a cable replacement technology for connecting different peripherals. i think you mean wifi, and that isnt any harder to connect than connecting a computer to a wifi network.

Wouldn't it just revert to GPRS if EDGE isn't available? I don't know because everywhere I've been with my iPhone so far has had EDGE support. Granted, even if the iPhone DID work on GPRS when EDGE was unavailable, I don't think I'd have the patience to use it.

And to add to what Celsdogg said, I've had no trouble connecting my iPhone to multiple WIFI networks. It actually acts pretty well as a wardriving utility

Furthermore:

data networks are deployed just like cell networks, and data networks basically work on cellular technology; notable, the cell site.

when cell phones were still analog, the rolled out digital spread spectrum technologies. that didnt cover all areas right away (and still doesnt), because they needed to deploy the equipment to handle the signaling.

with data networks, they have to also get a broadband backhaul to cell sites that will allow data transfer, that means T1/T3/ISDN/whatever else you can think of.

if the availability of the data network is the problem, then your problem is with cell phone topologies, not with the iphone itself.

that being said, i understand that an iphone isnt all cherry. nothing in the world is, technology, cars, people, water, paper, pictures, speakers, door handles, boxes, pens, pencils, tires, car wax, baby seats, sex, shoes, sports, staplers bank accounts bags, books, nothing.

Just for reference...

Now, I would have to agree that if you're in the Mid West you're pretty much screwed for EDGE coverage so you may want to steer clear of devices that rely solely on EDGE for data communications. But here's the thing... the iPhone does not rely solely on EDGE. You can use it on WIFI networks as well. As long as you inform yourself prior to buying the product, I don't see how it's a "scam". If you have questions about coverage in your area and ask an AT&T salesperson, I'm sure they would show you a coverage map. If they don't then that's just a piss poor salesman and not the fault of the provider.

I believe in tech toys. This is a gimmick to separate you from your $$$

Simplifying everything so the lowest common denominator can use it will make it all but useless. So there will still have to be an upper tech savvy layer to get anything done.

I remember when E-mail appliances and thin clients were going to render the PC obsolete several years ago.

I found this cartoon appropriate.

By the way--there is supposed to be a crack out to unlock the i-phone so you can use your carrier and network.

I've heard that too... I mean it was only a matter of time until it happened but even if you get an unlocked version you lose the visual voicemail feature and IMO that's one of the coolest features.

Will there be at least five alternatives with almost the same versatility at a fraction of the price in a few mere months? DEFINITELY

BMWs could be considered trendy. It's a status car. Case and point, my cousin is a doctor now. He's owned lots of cars all of which have been American... Ford Mustange, Dodge Charger, Chevy Tahoe... but now that he's a MD, he wants a Bimmer. So while there are plenty of alternatives to BMWs out there, we are all on a BMW forum so...

Trendy or not, it's frickin cool and I'm happy to own one.

And in reply to the part where you said there will be other alternatives... there is already one that I know of that's almost exactly like the iPhone (but granted just as expensive) and that's the LG Prada phone. (Sorry for the lame music in the video, not my video.)
