Yea those things are crazy and I think the only way to justify one is if you only do Hardcore stuff.

It's not overkill if you're a developer and need that kind of power, speed and storage... Hence the "Pro" tag...it is for professional users... Sure anyone can get one, but most people aren't going to be spending that kind of dough on a workstation...

Also, the regular configuration is much more reasonably priced, at $2499 USD... http://store.apple.com/1-800-MY-APPL...00&nclm=MacPro
You can configure it with all the goodies for about $16885 without software...lol Who needs 4 500 GB hardrives?? lol

Either way, an amazing machine...

EDIT: just realized its 17K not 14K, make that 8.5

When you are rendering 3d video with effects and multiple layers, etc., you need as much power as you can buy. For his senior project (5 minute video), one of my friends had to use 15 dual XEON computers to render overnight. Sure, you can buy 8.5 computers instead of one, but what if you only have room for 8 computers, and you need eight guys working on them, and you cannot afford to wait as long as the speed/processing power of a single computer would allow per workstation? You buy as much as you can afford/computer.

Getting one such workstation to edit homemovies and manage your iPod would be overkill. If you are doing hardcore game design and or 3d graphics, or even 2d video sometimes, if you will make your money back, go for the big guns. Very often such businesses lease their computer equipment anyways. Even if they buy, they end up getting special pricing, so they wouldn't pay a full $17k per computer.

my boss wanted to get this for his workstation at work. i doubt it will happen now, especially since they are complaining about the disposable water cups disappearing too fast.

The company my brother works for picked up one like that for some 3D terrain rendering. They were setting up a virtual model of a government training ground in Indiana and they just opted to get the most powerful thing they could. I think he said it costed them around 20k but was worth every penny.

Thats a great explanation...probably the best I've heard to justify such a large purchase. Great post.
