Now, I would have to agree that if you're in the Mid West you're pretty much screwed for EDGE coverage so you may want to steer clear of devices that rely solely
on EDGE for data communications. But here's the thing... the iPhone does not rely solely
on EDGE. You can use it on WIFI networks as well. As long as you inform yourself prior to buying the product, I don't see how it's a "scam". If you have questions about coverage in your area and ask an AT&T salesperson, I'm sure they would show you a coverage map. If they don't then that's just a piss poor salesman and not the fault of the provider.
