e36 318is fuel gauge problem
 
im having a problem with my fuel gauge , everything else is working but the fuel gauge doesent work and the fuel gauge warning light doesent work. ive checked the gauge float and the wiring on it and connections . is there a separate fuse for the fuel gauge? will i need a new cluster? :thanks

You could be having a problem with the gauge that was not uncommon when E36s were new, it's a bit odd that it's happening with a car with some years on it. There was some sort of electrical problem, and the solution for me was given by the dealer's service shop, pull fuse #30 or #11 (I'm not sure on those numbers) and leave out for 10 minutes. Reinsert. Cross fingers and see if that solves it.

thanks , that hasent worked ill try it again though . i might have to replace the unit in the tank .

It could be the unit, but before going to that trouble and expense, double check the fuses that relate to the sending unit and the fuel gauge, I think they are #30 and #11 but I'm not positive. There are at least two involved.
