Z3 rack is coming

Ok, so my steering rack is taking fluid like an irish drunk. so its time to replace.

I am thinking about a rebuilt Z3 rack from a 1.9 or 2.8 liter. They have a 2.7 lock to lock rack. Which is a big difference from my 4.0 lock to lock.

Now does anyone know what will be involoved with the swap? Im gonna be taking it to a friend shop and doing it on a rack. I know control arms, sway bars tie rods..etc. Will i have to lift the engine?

Also, im gonna swap in new tie rods and the shaft to my steering wheel(its clanking..heh)

anything else to think about?

maybe new PS lines while i got it all apart?

I would sure do the lines. Just did mine and they were like sponges :doh

While at school i had the cops called on me for leaking oil out of the car. they called my house, made a big scene.

time to fix the problem.

so $359 for the rack, then im gonna get the other parts next day after i recieve the rack.
Im pumped. 2.7lock to lock ftw.

nick_318is 02-27-2007 08:49 PM

Im Jealous, definitly let me know how great it makes the steering feel.

Numark318i 03-01-2007 11:15 PM

k i picked up new tie rod assemblies today. Order most of the other parts im going to need also today.

question is, will i be able to get my alignemtn good enough on my own without electronic equipment to get it to a shop?

has anyone done this before?

nick_318is 03-01-2007 11:28 PM

You might want to join e30tech, m42club.com, or where the link is from and send a pm to the guy, I'm pretty sure any of those sources can at least find you someone who has done this or let you start a thread and ask the question.

good point^^

Numark318i 03-05-2007 12:52 PM

so update again.

I picked up the Z3 rack. Turns out the parts list on R3vlimited was slightly off. the high pressure hose that runs from the pump to the rack is 160$..!!!!! so..im being pwned. i also have to get those random nuts and bolts/seals..3 days to order from the dealer.

oh well..i think the core charge which i will be getting back will finish off the part costs.
going to start the destruction on wednesday.

Numark318i 03-23-2007 01:44 PM

alright so i started to do the install.

I cannot take the knucle off of the rack. its fucking impossible.

nick_318is 03-23-2007 02:36 PM

Let us know if my suggestion helps. If not get a torch and heat the sucker way up and then try again.

Numark318i 03-23-2007 04:34 PM

ok..so i got the knucle off.

turns out its different from the one on the DIY. i cannot expand this one to make it shorter...so ima try it with this. if not ill return teh z3 rack and get the E30 spec one.

Numark318i 03-23-2007 06:25 PM

update..knuckle fits. no need to change it.

need to put it all together. also there was no need for the high pressure hose either.

saved 100$
