If you're keeping the 540, then I'd take the 911, if you;re trading or selling the E39........... then I'd probably still go with the 911. And thats coming from a guy who would sell his soul for an E39 M5. But you have the next best thing in that model already, so why change to the same thing?

lol but in all seriousness, i really think you should at least test drive the vette. if you dont like that, may i suggest waiting a little bit and seeing what the e92 ///M will be like

Thanks for the input. I would also consider the vette but they seem to be everywhere. I am planning to test drive them all. I like the viper because of the looks, minimally produced, I can work on the engine myself. They range in HP from 400-500 depending on the year and they can be tuned to 600-700 HP. They can always handle better with suspension work. They have been succesful racing also.
I love the E39 M5, but I think I would like a little change....maybe
I am not sure if I will keep the 540 yet. The challenge is if I decide to sell the 540, then I would need something that I can drive to work. I am considering being selfish because my wife and I don't have kids yet and this may be the time to have a 2 seater.
Keep up the suggestions. I am test driving several 911s tomorrow.
I am looking at used 911s and vipers.
I would love the turbo carrera, but can't buy one yet.

track? then pick from these three in order
1) Z06 (has consistently obliterated cars worth double around the track)
2) z4 m coupe (one of the best handling cars BMW has ever made)
3) 911 (i dont need to type anything here, its a 911, i only typed here b/c i did so for the previous two choices)
now get out there and drive em all. i will be jealous of your weekend

I went test driving this weekend. Here are my thoughts. I have not test driven everything yet! I also went looking for an SUV for my wife.
2002 911 S: $55000
Silver with black interior, 6 speed manual. This car looks, drives and handles like a dream. The car sticks to ground, even in inclement weather. It has high reving engine that is silky smooth. I am 6'1" and fit in their well. It is a drivers car. My second favorite.
2000 Dodge Viper: $60000
Red with white stripe. Holy shit batman, I think I have whiplash. This car is unadulterated speed and torque. It was loud, the seats were uncomfortable, and it felt raw and unrefined. It felt disconnected from the road. Amazing for the drag strip. It could use some suspension mods.
2003 Mustang Cobra SVT: $30000
This car has a blower. It was blue with black interior. It also felt raw, raucous and loud. It didn't shift very smooth. God, it was loud. The seats were semi-comfortable. The back end likes to come loose if you accerate hard. The most car, for the least price.
2006 Cayman S: $58000
This car was black with beige interior. 6 MT. This car was my favorite. It stuck to the road like no other, refined, smooth revving engine and shifter. This is a purists car. From the factory, it is made for the track, weekend twisties, daily driver.
2007 Acura TL Type S: $38000
This was black with black interior and all of the bells and whistles. It is rated at 286 HP, but it doesn't feel like it. Handles extremely well. I felt a little cramped in it.
2007 Acura MDX: $42000
This is a fine automobile. It has the sport package, allows a change in the dampening of the suspesions, 300 HP. It is very comfortable and joy to cruise in.
2006 MDX: $35000
Again, a nice vehicle, but not as comfortable as the 2007. This engine is also smaller and felt underpowered.
2002 BMW X5, 4.6L with a Dinan Supercharger: $45000
Are you sure this is an SAV and not an M5. This car hauled ass, but it a had a lot of lag before 2800 RPM. It has all of the creature comforts, heated seats, Nav, etc. This car also had the Dinan suspension. The exhaust note on this truck was mean (Dinan exhaust).
2004 Porsche Cayenne, 3.0L: $42000
This had all of the creature comforts that the BMW X5 had, but it handled better. Very connected to the road. The 6 cylinder felt just right in this SUV. I liked this truck the most, but for the cost, I would opt for the MDX because of the warranty.
I have yet to test drive the Z4 M coupe, the 335i, the GMC Yukon and the Jeep Grand Cherokee. Sometime this week and next week I will test drive them and then narrow down the choices.
With much discussion with the wife, we will buy her an SUV first, hopefully spend less, and then we can get me an impractical car if I desire one this summer.

Your Ride: 1997 Camry CE
1. Porsche 911 S
2. Dodge Viper SRT
3. E39 M5
4. Z4 M Coupe
My first choice would probably be the Porsche because they're smooth, sleek, and fast. You can mod them to be wicked on the track. The only Porsche I would suggest would be the one that has a Turbo in it. Or, if you end up buying one without a turbo, stick one in it. Like what we talked about the 996 with a 997 turbo.
Vipers...are vipers, big, uncomfortable, but flashy. Vipers like to be compared to Z06s, but IMO, the Z06 wins because of comfort, looks, and speed. If you are going to mod a viper, the best would be the Hennesse (sp?) and it blows all other Vettes outta the water. But you are going to spending alot more than you want for a modded Hennesse Viper. Oh yeah, the 2000 Viper isn't the newest SRT10. I suggest getting an SRT10 if you are looking into getting a Viper.
e39 M5. I love the e39 bodystyle, and yes the 400hp engine. This would be my 2nd choice. You have a 540, but let me tell you. 540i have alot more problems than M5s do. I see it time and time again. The M5 also has alot more hp and yes you can tell a difference. You can also mod it with whatever tuner you want. Short throw shifter, Dinan SC, ACS exaust, Remus, whatever. I suggest looking for ONLY a 2003 model, the last years are the best to get.
Z4 M Coupe. I am not a fan of the M Coupes. But they are growing on me. I personally am a M Roadster fan. If you ever end up test driving an M Roadster, test drive an e46 M3, the M3 is quicker and has more space. Even better, try and find a Competition Package M3, you won't be dissapointed in the difference.
So my choices would be....
1. Porsche 911 (turbo)
2. e39 M5
3. Dodge Viper SRT10
4. Z4 M Coupe
The 335i, the GMC Yukon and the Jeep Grand Cherokee.
I love the 335i! The coupe is more sporty and the manual has less lag. But you'll probably want to test drive the automatic because of downtown traffic and less hassel.
The new 07 Yukon/07 Escalade are the same. The Escalade is more luxurous because of it's title. If you look into used Yukons, check out the Denali with the 6.0 liter Vette engine. Those are pretty mean. A doctor that has a M6 Convertible has a Yukon Denali as his daily driver. I drove it following him home a couple times....I like it.
Jeep Grand Cherokee, if you are looking at used....check out the Limited Grand Cherokee Laredos. They have V8s. My gf's family has one, and it's nice.
