86 Cutlass Tranny Pregunta
Greetings gang. 86 Cutlass transmission is giving me some problems. It won't go into reverse when it is COLD. Once the car warms up, it usually kicks in. Ideas?

Heh, I had a couple of Cutlasses back in the day, an '83 and an '84. And I can tell you that you need to go find a rebuilt tranny. Should be a GM 200 Turbo Hydramatic, IIRC. Soon reverse will eventually fail, 3rd will go next, followed by 2nd, then finally 1st

^^^No actually, I gave him one, then he gave me one a few years later, neither of which ran at the time of ownership transfer. And he also had a 3rd Cutlass, a '71 4dr. No, that one didn't run either  CAPiTUL, all three cars I'm talking about had bad tranny's. The '82-'87 2dr Cutlasses used to be my favorite car, just loved how they looked. But I gave up on them after a while.

Damn man. You've had your luck w/them, huh! Yeah, this tranny was passive from 3rd to 4th, but the reverse gave out and takes forever to kick into gear. Once it is good, it is good. But, it can take some time. Also, it shifts from park to drive very hard. Honestly, I can't complain about the car. I bought it 3 years ago for 600 bucks and it has treated me VERY well, thankfully. 162000 on the Odo. I love it. Though, not as much as my Bimmer. . . . which is now out of commission until who knows when! #$)(%*&@#)*($! Sorry, still not over it. :-D

I'd do a fluid & filter change first. If that doesn't cure it - take it out back & shoot it and put it out of it's misery.   |
