My old POS cars (kinda long)

Anyone ever owned a crappy POS car? I just got to thinking about the hunks of junk I've owned in the past, thought I'd share. Having owned 14 cars in my lifetime, I've had a few winners. Ahhh, back in the day, the good old 80's . . .

**70-something Mustang Cobra II, can't remember the exact year. In baby blue. My first car, never ran. It was to be a project car, never got it started. Instead, we just drank beers in it and keep warm in the winter. The rear left floorboard was rusted through, so you could literally do a Fred Flinstone in that car. I ended up selling it to this coke addict down the street (they called him Mikey Nose, go figure). About 6mos later the cops called me and told me to pick up the car at the impound . . turns out Mikey got it running, never transferred the paperwork, and used it as a getaway car during a robbery.

**'78 Chevy Chevette. Not too bad, but no balls as you would expect. I wasn't savvy about cars at the time, and couldn't figure out why it kept stalling out at idle. So I just kept my foot on the gas at all times, even at red lights. My first attempt at car stereos- a big cardboard box in the hatch with 6x9's in it

**'76 Buick Regal. Bought it for 600 bucks. Driving out of work one day, the ball joints on both sides decided to pop, dropping the front end down. It was red, well mostly, except for the black front left fender and a yellow hood. Mods I did: staggered z28 wheels, Gabriel HiJackers, Moroso air filter, Accel ignition, and it had no exhaust . . people didn't know whether to laugh or run. But it had a 350 that just wouldn't die. In the end, I traded it for a 80pc socket set.

**'81 Olds Toronado. The paint was orange peeled all over, the rear was sagging, and the rotors up front were paper thin and scraping. Drove it like that for 3mos. But what it had: Nakamichi/Rockford Fosgate/Soundstream system, and a keg tap going from the trunk to the back seat. Those were crazy drinking days. It was finally junked after my friend dumped a ton of starter fluid down the carb and the engine bay caught fire.

Anyone else got stories?

man, i dont remember any of those. maybe coz i wasnt around yet.

1978 Cadillac Fleetwood Brougham - my mom bought it in '95 for about $250. when i started driving, they had other cars, and that one was sitting, so i ended up with that bastid. has a 425 cu. in. engine, and when i first drove it, it could take off decently fast, but after that you were chug-a-luggin. wouldnt go faster than 55, at that point, the motor would speed up and slow down on its own. that thing was like 25' long. stereo blew ass, tape deck with matching knobs on both sides, used one of those tape adapter things to play cd's with my discman. no heat, no air, but crusty leather and power windows and locks!

edit: o yeah, when i got my first bimmer, we called a place in the paper that advertised "cash for clunkers." when they came and saw it they said, "we didnt mean like that!"

Hmm . . you were between 4 and 7 or 8 when I had them, and may have been living elsewhere at the time

This is the car I learned to drive in. 88 Merced 420sel with 275k on it.

My first car, 85 nissan 300z got for free from my dads friend. This was while I was still in votech so everything that you could do for a tune up was done. If you dont know 300z's untill 87 were rust buckets, so was mine. By the time I got rid of it I was just scraping the last bit of bondo out of my 2nd gallon. I ended up shoving auto shoppers and rags into holes just to take up space. It always had a slight engine tap, it had 114k on it so I never really worried about it. I would take the car off roading with my friends 91 sable behind me and oneday luckly I was close to home doing some dounghts in the gass and the rpm's got a little to high and a keep on a valve bluew dropping the valve and getting bent by the piston smashing into it. The car still ran so I drove it home and it sat for a while untill I took the head off. Took the bent valve out, never reassembled it beucase it was a nightmare of vaccum lines and electrical connections so I gave it to a junk yard.

2nd car I got about a month before I blew my Z up. 88 caddy fleetwood brougham. 500$ with suppoustly 96K on it. I did the same thing. All new shocks, front suspension, never messed with the bushings. Valve cover gaskets water pump ect ect. Never did the radiator on it. Mistake. I also installed a complete infinity system in it from subs to amp to speakers to headunit. There wasnt a headliner in the car so I got some junky speakers and just threw them up there by their magnets. I ended up having 8 speakers from the origional 4 that came with the car. It got loud enough that you couldnt hear yourself talk and you were a little deaf once you got out. I was taking over what we call "roller coaster hills" doing about 80 with my foot to the floor and the radiator blew on me, about 15miles from home. I knew the area good so I got alot of water from a nearby lake and kept filling it up. Only took me 1 hour and 30min to get home. After going through 2 new radiators, they eneded up also leaking. One leaked all the tranny fluid into the coolant from the tranny cooler. So I fially got the car straight and the alternator decided to go. I guess to much juice it had to put out for my ridicilous system. After my 4th alternator from Advanced auto parts and each one only putting out about 11.5 volts I sold it to a junk yard for 100$.

Before I sold it I got a 90 jeep cheroke from the same guy I got the Z from for 600$. It was his daily driver and hes one of those people that fixed everything. But its a jeep and what idoit would spend money on those? So while driving that for a month for 2 I finally got my car I have now.

This is my dads car, but whenever we go somewhere Im usually driving it. 87 Merc grand marquese
5.0 V8, dual exhausts, posi rear, grandpa owned just rolled over 100 grand. It says on the dash board "ride enginered" so you just know its good.

My current and 4th car my 92 525i with 160k on it. M50 no vannos, beautiful running car. Now I have become my dads friend, the anal asshole that fixes everything. But it is very nice to have a BMW being a BMW tech, I get all parts for 40% off.

It would have been a favorite except for the parts falling apart or just plain falling off

I bought it "New" with about 100 gentle Demo miles on it.

At about 2000 miles it popped a seal and blew the rear end when it ran out of grease--at 35 mph on ICE.

Had to fight GM over the warranty because in those 100 gentle Demo miles a salesman had ripped the clutch out of the car in an autocross and it was replace with a clutch disk labeled Ford Genuine Parts by the Chevy dealer

At about 3500 miles the rear suspension "stretched" and blew a rear tire at about 80 mph. Known problem but "it might not happen to everybody"

At about 5000 miles I split the transmission case from end to end and the cluster gear was partially wedge thru the crack Known problem again-little old ladies were cracking them but they didn't bother to fix it until the '66 model.

At that stage I let my brother take over the payments at my parents insistance.

Clutch cable "Fell off" soon after.

Then the Knocking started as he was driving by a different Chevy dealer. None of the metal locks for the rod bolts had been bent over at the factory and all of the rods are loose on the crank. The main bearings were the same way.

He traded it a week later.

And I won't start on the Chevy Vega that I bought new
