Okay, so I'm pretty sure that everyone here knows that MB AMG engines have a little plate on them that say that they were "hand-built" by Some German Guy.
Doesn't MB produce around 10,000 AMG models each year or so? How in the hell are there 10,000 engine being hand-built each year???
Sorry, I was watching Top Gear and got curious.

Yeah, and what about that 35-hour workweek, the 6 weeks yearly vacation, the generous maternity and sick leave provisions, not to mention all the holidays and days off for political rallies, there's no way that a modern welfare state can produce anything but indolence and sloth!

Amanda they only need to make about 193 per week to get to 10,000. From some things I have seen it seems that a person can put an engine together in about a day (please correct me if im wrong, but with all fresh peices and knowing what your doing it seems possible), so they would only really need 30 or so people to make it work.

strictly speaking these engines are not completely hand built, quite a lot of the component assembly is carried out by "robots" and then human assembly workers add or fasten components to each engine on a moving production line so yes to some extent the engines are hand built ,but much the same as any other industry costs are kept to a minimum by the use of automation.

"Hand-built" is a clever marketing term used that is different from "hand-made." The assemblers are heavily assisted by robotic equipment, and they have more than one dude working on engines. A lot of the "hand" element is in bolt/nut torquing and other such things. With enough peopel working simultaneously, I can see then easily building a few hundred engines per week. Also, they charge enough to cover for that labor cost....

yea that top gear episode was funny, maybe when they say "proudly hand built by ...." they are probably talking about that little plaque that they put on the engine

First of all, Benz isn't Benz anymore, thier made in the same factories as Chysler, Dodge, and Jeep, so how could the AMG engines be hand made. Thier not they take regular benz engines and supercharge them and tighten up the suspension, AMG engines aren't special their just like all engine from Benz.

ill agree with you that benz isnt like it used to be, but i seriously doubt that they are built in the same factories are chrysler and dodge, yea they are owned by daimler chrysler, but they are still german designed, and im pretty sure most are built in germany(although dont quote me on it)

Oh. You again. One of the biggest criticisms that Daimler-Chrysler has taken is that the Daimler and Chrysler divisions hardly share any technology at all (hyperbole -- they do share some technol;ogy, but I still think it is negligible). It was strictly a business-driven merger. Chrysler has been the division that has helped keep the company afloat, whereas MB's decreasing reliability has hurt the company. They do not share facilities at all.
AMG engines are assembled in the AMG plant in Affalterbach. Even today, they only have one worker dedicated to each engine. That is why they are engraved with the assembler's signature.
I am by no means a fan of MB. I really don't like them much as a corporation. However, I believe in giving credit where credit is due.
Lastly, be careful when you make up statements about stuff you don't really know. It is not as bad on the Internet, but it is pretty embarrasing if you do something like this in 'real' life.
