Yeah but isn't the point to buy a new, cheaper car so that you have a warranty? Any e46 you get for $15000 will most likely have an expired warranty.
I think the Civic sounds like a decent way to go.
My mom had been looking at the Mazda3 hatch awhile ago, along with Minis. The mazda is a nice car, but by the time she got all the options she wanted on it, it was smarter to go for the Mini. That probably is not true now though, since I think Mini's have gone up a bit in price.
i looked on ebay and it saw a lot of 325 e46's for around 15,000
Just as Linds said (and as had been mentioned above already), the dude's looking for a car that runs fine when he buys it, that is affordable, and that will not be a pain in the neck (and wallet) with constant need for repair. That is why he's looking at buying new -- warranty ftw.

I want something cheap, decent, and will last me until I get through college and get my professional life stable. A 12 year old car will not help, especially being a BMW.
I want to spend around 15k, really don't want to spend more.
15k obviously limits me quite a bit, but I know that there are definately some possibilities.
One car I was looking at is the Mazda 3. Base starts around 14k.
My best friend just got one and he loves it. I am not sure if his is base or not, but it seems like a great car to get from place to place. From the Mazda site, I am not sure if it comes standard with air conditioning.... Sure it does, but the site is throwing me off...
Another I am looking at is the Honda Fit.... Don't know much about it, but it starts at around 14500 or so....
If it was possible to find a slightly used Mini Coop, for 14k or so, that would be a possibility...
Any ideas guys? What is the reliability on these cars? Pluses and Minuses?
Thanks!
Have you ever considered leasing a newrer bmw? no repairs cost, just the oil changes and tires if need be,
