Airbag replacement...?

I was doing some maintenance on my mother's '99 Audi A6 and needed to consult the owner's manual. In so doing I came across a section that said the airbag should be replaced, even if never having been deployed, by the 14-year mark (why not 15?). I've come across one other reference like this, for Mercedes, but as the E36 model is getting pretty well up there in age, does anyone know anything further about this as it applies to BMWs, or other cars?

I have hear this too.

BUT when the new airbags and installation costs exceed the value of the vehicle AND the date stamp on the "new" airbags is about the same as the one on your old airbags whatcha gonna do?

I doubt that BMW does much for stocking of "just manufactured" air bags for an E36 until the stock is gone of the original batch made at the same time as the car was.

If anyone considers it I would suggest asking for the manufacture date of the replacement parts.

If the airbag did not deploy, the repairer should inspect the airbag system for possible dents, cracks or wiring damage that may affect the integrity and performance of the airbag system in the future..check this link for Again with the spam link! *bat*
