M5General discussion and technical help all year M5 cars.
SMG, Sequential Manual Gearbox. Which part of that name leads you believe it is not a manual. It doesn't have a foot operated clutch. So what. It is a manual. You'll be trying to tell me that F1 cars aren't manual shortly too. SMG is a direct trickle down from F1 technology, just as VTEC and fuel injection is.
i believe that the "manual" in the term implies that the driver selects the gear, rather than having it automatically selected. in the this manner, the SMG is a manual.
SMG is the way of the way of the future. No human driver can shift gears as fast and precisely as the SMG can. I have not driven one yet, but I can imagine there is still a pretty good feel to it, as the car car actually does shift at your command. I am happy there are SMGs now. That way when I grow old and tired of pushing down on a clutch pedal (which just happened to my dad last year at age 62), I will not have to get an automatic (like he did). RIght now it is all a non-issue, because I don't want to spend the extra cash it would take -- I have stuff for which I need to save up some $$$.
