oil change and requirements
I just bought my 04 m3 about month ago(drove 4000k). I already have the oil change light on(inspaction note before start the car is zero). I went to the dealership to ask what is going on. Cuz I have another 2 bmws but I know they are different than the M. When I bought the car the dealer(not bmw dealer) told me this car can just put in mobile 5w or 10w 30 full synthetic. However, the bmw dealer try to tell me this car needs specialized services, which includ Cathrol tws oil, bmw proformance oil filter and etc. Do I have to go with all bmw stuff? I know maybe I should but they cost me about $600 total... what should I do? or if any of you have better ideas that wont hurt my car. Thank you very much!!
the e46 requires the castrol tws 10w60, you dont have to go to the dealer to get the service done but you should get the oil from them since its only available through them.
the price may seem high but when you consider that the 10w60 is a long life oil (10-15k+ miles) its actually not overpriced at $10-11 a qt.
whoever told you you can use 5w30 or 10w30 is an idiot and should be avoided at all costs if you value your car.

Well do. Thanks a lot. So, I will get the oil and filter then do it at my own shop to save money from the labor is that ok? Any speciale tools that I need? Plus how can I re-set the light?

RESETTING OIL SERVICE INDICATOR:
If your OBC needs to be reset after completing your oil change, there are two ways. NOTE: If you miss a step, just turn the key back off and try again:
A. Model Year 1999 to Mid-2000: You should have the older round 20-pin DLC connector under your hood behind the battery terminal, you need to use a small length of wire to connect (short) pins 7 and 19 for 3-5 seconds with the ignition key in position 1 (Accessory).
B. After Mid-2000: You should not have the 20-pin DLC connector. You only need to hold the left odometer reset button while turning the key to position 1 (Accessory). Keep holding the button for 5 or so seconds until any of the following shows in the display: OIL SERVICE or INSPECTION with RESET or RE. Release the button and press it again for another 5 or so seconds until RESET or RE flash. While the display flashes, press the button one more time briefly. If done correctly, END SIA should show up for a few seconds. All done.

DDm smells like a Jim Powell venture to me. No thanks. I'd be afraid of the mucus trail the call would leave all over my phone. Although in all reality you would probably be fine ordering from them, I wouldn't patronize the place if someone knocked on the door and paid me to run their product.
