HIDs in E36 foggys

I am considering doing this to my old fogs..I want to hear from someone who has done this mod. I realize there is a lot of fitting to be done, I once read a DIY and it really was a lot of cutting of wires and stuff.
What is the easiest way to do this? Bulbs are H1, can I use shorter bulbs from E39?
