I've never seen them standard on E30s over here in Europe. I must get one though. I hear they do reduce the risk of cars not seeing your braking lights and shunting you!

^^^ yeah, because its not always on. i think sometimes cant differentiate between park lights and brake lights sometimes, so the third brake light is a sure sign that they are on the brakes.

Actually many BMW's, Mercs and Volvos have the main brake lights separate from the park lights, though obviously a center separate brake light helps even more.

and this is the break light on a 88 E30, you can see the difference from the later models. this one is more boxier indeed.
