1984 BMW 533i vs. late 80s 5.0 Mustang convert.
Ok, so I'm on route 2 heading toward Boston to go out to dinner with some friends. Route 2 has a bunch of intersections with stop lights and its 2 lanes in most places. Well I managed to get in front of a pack of cars only to get a red light. I'm like shit, I'm going be late because I have seriously gotten every red light (don't you hate when that happens). So as im getting angry with the light, a blue 5.0 mustang conv. pulls up next to me. I look at the car and the driver and don't think twice about it. Then all of a sudden the kid starts revving the hell out of his engine and bouncing off the rev-limiter for no joke 3-4+ seconds at a time multiple times. I'm like wow. So just for shifts and giggles I roll down the window and ask if he is having fun. He just laughed and asked if i wanted to race. I asked what he had done to it and he said all he had was an exhaust, throttle body, and intake. So I said I would race him. The light eventually turned yellow for the cross traffic then the fag in the 5.0 started bouncing off the rev limiter again. Then the light turned red...and then ours turned green. I hear the genius in the 5.0 redline the engine and dump the clutch which is obviously the best way to launch a mustang . He just sits there and bakes the tires. I didn't even bother to take off. The stang finally got traction and started accelerating and pulled up next to me. I floored it and he did too. He stayed right next to me until the top of 3rd gear when i started to pull a little. After i went into 4th, he gained back that little bit of room I had gained. He shifted and I gained some room and continued to pull slowly. I went into 5th and was still pulling on him. I stopped at 135mph and had gained like 3 car lengths on him. Not too bad for a 21 year old bimmer with 218k miles.

I thought it would too, but i guess not. Although converts do weigh more. Also, i have a Road and track from 1991 with the GT 5.0 convert with an auto tranny and it says it has 225hp and does 0-60 in 8.6 seconds.

had another run in with a 5.0 convert...this time earlier 80s....you know, with the kinda squared headlights. I smoked him worse than i did the blue one.

Everyone thought the 5.0 (4.9L 302CID really) was gonna smoke the world. Trouble is the pushrod valvetrain wheezes at high speed, and there is a durability issue too. Muscle car enthusiasts in many cases blew up their Trans Ams and Mustangs on long runs on German Autobahns
