A new 318i owner
Hiya,
My last car was a '94 Subaru WRX, sold it and went to Tanzania for three months, and coming back home I have just become a proud owner of a '96 318i (Japanese spec import).
It's completely stock at the moment. The first thing to change would probably be the stuck-in-Japanese frequencies radio...
Here are a few newbie concerns:
According to the wikipedia my engine is supposed to be a M43B18, I've found the chassis number, is there anywhere inside the engine bay that I can find out exactly what engine I have?
From what I gather it's the earlier 1.8L engines that have the gasket problem? I've also read about the plastic water pumps, would my engine have it?
Anyway I've enjoyed lurking and reading these forums and KBs so far.

Welcome to UB.c
And no worries, neither problem applies to your car The gasket problem was only on some earlier 318's equipped with the M42 engine (pre '93), and the water pump issue only applies to 6cyl engines.
Let's see some pics!

Thanks for that link, just what I needed...
Here's some pics of the car - taken by the previous owner:
It looks okay but needs a decent wash

I'm guessing you probably have the M44 as the engine in the car but I do not know about the model specs for japan just the us.

Hmm... let's see...
Engine slanted to the right, plus driver and steering, pedal, etc all on the right too. I would say it would handle itself better on a right-hand corner than a left

Steering right or left is ok, it's the steering right/shifter left is the tricky part for us...

Thanks for all your welcomes...
I've been told by my mechanic that it's a M43 - the M44 being the twin-cam 1.9L in later 318iS models?

Some interior shots
Notice the tiny "JPN" on the speedometer:
"Poverty pack" interior, no armrest and cupholder in center console:
Yes it's a stick shift...
Engine bay:
I think this is something to with with the aircon:
Use genuine BMW parts only?
