Glad to be a member
I am stanold1207. Won't say exactly how old. I do have a question though.
All these model numbers (E36, etc.) how do I tell what I have? It is a 1996 318I. Only one engine size available. Is this like the GMs? LS this and LS that?
I am used to the old days when you had an Imapla and 396 SS. Now I do not know and now I bought this car for my Grandson and have several thing to get fixed before giving it to him and I do not know what to look for as far as information because I do not know the E numbers.

It's a little confusing to me too, because like you, I'm old and used to work on the big block Chevy's. But, it's easy once you get it's based loosely on body type. Your 1996 3 series would be E36. Actually, I stand corrected, it appears yours is really an E36/5. If you want to know the rest of the details:

Series Generations
Internally, BMW associates an "e-code" for each generation of a series ("E" stands for Entwicklung, German for development or evolution). These "chassis codes" only change to signify a major redesign of a series, or the introduction of a new series. BMW AG reported in September 2006 that BMW will switch to the letter "F" for their future models, beginning with the F01 7 Series replacement.
