Just signed up to site, recently purchased a used '98 328ic, my first Bimmer, used to drive a Stang, but wanted something that was better on gas and a little classier. I've had the car looked over by a BMW tech, he tells me that my front bushings are a little soft and one of my tie rods has some play in it. Before I bought it I had the dealer replace the other tie rod, so that sounds about right. How difficult is it to do my own repairs, replace the bushings and tie rod? I've done my share of repairs to my Stang, along w/ some mods, so I think I could probably handle this, with the exception of the alignment that will likely be needed. I'm in Charlotte, NC. Anyone out this way?

Welcome, I think you will find that these cars aren't too hard to work on. I would suggest looking into getting a Bentley repair manual for the e36 (your bodystyle) it will give you a lot of useful information in making repairs.
