8 series Fanatic

I have a 1995 840 in Arctic Silver (Pictures in the 8 Series section) as a daily driver.

I am a Forum Junkie! Look for me in 8 Series forums everywhere :)

I live just outside Portland Oregon

I also have most of the electronic documentation for BMWs. Including the electrical diagrams for most everything BMW has imported to the US.

I am also probably old enough to be either Father or even Grandfather to most of you ;)

Thanks again for the Welcome :)

I'll be up for the BMWCCA Concours this summer.

We have a 3 day 8 Fest meet on Whidbey Island this fall too.

Other than that I don't have any plans to head North this summer.

expensive to upkeep?

TerryY 05-15-2005 07:05 PM

I spend far more in toys than I do to keep my baby running.

I am a DIYer so the only time the car sees a shop is for stuff too heavy or if I don't have time. So I have only spent a few hundred $ on maintenance.

If you are at the mercy of the dealer, Yes they are expensive to maintain. But then so is an E32 7 series which is about 60% or so common.

The electronics are quite good and stable but the dealers seem to be computer swappers for even simple problems. $$ add up quickly that way.

I have a good independent for the heavy stuff though. I can tell them what it needs and that is where they go first :)
They don't change the fuel pump, fuel pump relay and the ECU because the less than $100 crank position sensor is bad. (The failure mode is: If the CPS is Open, the ECU disables the fuel system by removing the ground from the fuel pump relay. Nobody ever looks for a missing Ground :( )

So if you are DIY inclined they are simple and not much more expensive than any 3 series to fix. There are sites where a lot of the potential repairs are photo documented from end to end.

That's great! The more tech-heads here the better! Hopefully you'll help give our 8-series forum a bit of a kick start. Kick up a thread over there and post up some pics of your ride!

Welcome to United. :wave Mind me asking how you found us?

TerryY 05-15-2005 10:38 PM

I passed by a week or so ago- don't remember what triggered the visit.

Today I saw 95bmwpower's now disabled signature on Bimmerforums NW forum.

Still no real 8 threads so I registered and started one :)

So here I are!!!

a mechanic told me that the 8 series engines are not up to par like most bmw engines.. he said that they are a fortune to up keep.... hmm
fucking sweet car though, way sweet. i wish i could have one

TerryY 05-16-2005 07:00 AM

Mechanics can be the best comedians sometimes.

Maybe that is why both engines still have current and even more complicated Variants?

They're the same engines used in the 740i and 750i...
