Need an External HD
Guys,
I am going to be looking for a good external Harddrive shortly i'm looking for something FAST and RELIABLE and with about 250GB of storage without spending too much. I have checked out a few sites and some have some pretty good deals but i'm weary because of the old saying "you get what you pay for".
I want to use it to backup my harddrive(s) and as overflow and it will be for a MAC so any special backup features for xp i don't care about.
that ext hdd looks good, but i have never heard of them before, and i would worry about who makes the hdd that is on the inside of it.
when i needed an external hdd, i bought regular desktop hdd's (that is all that is inside externals) that i trust. one is a seagate, the one i had in the desert is a Western Digital. and it runs perfectly still.
to me, hard drives are the most important thing in a computer, because if you lose that, all your data is gone. so i tend to spend a little more for what i believe it reliability. IMHO i believe that is getting a reliable desktop drive, and sticking it in a $30-$40 external enclousure.
looking on ebay, you can get a internal 250GB internal HDD with an 8MB cache @ 7200 RPM anywhere between $72 on upwards, and enclosure from $30 or so. i know its more than $70 after rebate for the one you found, but data is important
OT: from the comments for the cavalary external HDD

Cons: 1. Although it is a 250 gig capacity HD, the usable space is about 232 (insignificant gripe; 232 gigs is a huge amount of space).
he is getting 250GB, using 1000KB vs 1024KB. at 1024KB it would be around 230 some. . . just a gripe i have when people complain about it.

Thanks Celesdogg, I also am with you I want something good and its my data that I won't want to loose. I will also look into building one from an enclousure.
As far as the iMac goes i'm not sure on pricing yet i'm going to find out what they are going for on eBay etc and then take a little off if anyone on here wants a deal. Here are a few quick bits of info, upgraded it to 1gig of ram(2x512) also have upgraded to 10.5 Tiger will ship with both the original and upgrade discs. 80 gig hd combo drive (not a superdrive), recently had the logic board and power supply replaced under extended warranty from a problem the early iMacs had, in great condition and I have to original box.
Checking e-bay it looks like $720-750 is a pretty consistent price for these, I will let you guys know when i'm ready to get rid of it.

Umnitza now provides a mechanic to install all parts ordered right in the box! It's their new "Total customer service program" that will eliminate all the haters and keep incompetents from breaking **** and blaming the vendor! When you are all set simply call INS and they will pick him up free of charge.
