Kubuntu 6.06
 

i have been using Ubuntu on and off for awhile now, but just today i got in the mail the free Kubuntu CD's i ordered for free. its basically ubutnu 6.06 with the KDE desktop, but it is a lot nicer. so far, in the first few minutes here, im pretty impressed.

it even supports my atheros wireless card out of the box. takes some configuration with my last install of ubuntu (hoary hedgehog, not the latest version build)

also, some toshiba laptops allow you to scroll with the edges of the touch pad via toshiba's alps touch pad drivers. kubuntu also has that built in.

just using the live version now, but so far i can say this, every version of ubuntu/kubuntu gets better and better!

Oh this makes me happy :clap My project pc has Red Hat with KDE :) But I'm so glad to see a Linux Distro coming up to a real OS ! So nice to see UB.C on Konqueror (Linux browser FYI) :shades

^^^ agree. its awesome. im only trying out the live cd right now, when i install it one of the first things i will prolly do is apt-get install firefox

So do you prefer KDE over gnome? I just recently dual booted unbuntu onto my laptop, it's the first time I've installed a distro, and I do like gnome... I've used KDE on knoppix live, but not for very long...

So what do you prefer about KDE?? Because, if I can find reason to, I may move to Kubuntu... Let me know...;)

AFAIK the Gnome/KDE is all about personal preference :type

Is it easy to switch over?
Can I have both XP and Linux on my computer, to try it out before switching?

Does Ubuntu work user friendly like Mac and Windows OS?

How about software? Can I use Photoshop, Itunes, AIM, ect?

On a PC Windows and Linux dual boot great -- Doz needs to be on the first boot record (MBR master boot record) In Mac before the Intel CPU the only Linux Distro that works well is Yellow Dog. You can always run late Linux Distros off live CD without installing (knoppix, Mepis etc)

Like witeshark said, you can try out a live flavor before installing to see what you prefer... Knoppix and Ubuntu are great distros where you can burn the iso directly to a cd...once that cd is ready, you simply pop in your drive, and you have a ready to go linux distro! It's not too in depth, but it really gives you a taste of what you can do with it... I recommend trying both to see what you prefer... With Ubuntu, you can use the same cd to install on your system as well...:D

You can indeed have both Linux and XP at the same time... I have ubuntu and XP on my laptop... Just choose which os you want on loading, and you're there...:D

Ubuntu is, like linux as a whole, very diferent than using Windows or Mac...once you get used to it though, you wonder why you ever used anything else... And if you ever can't figure out how to do something, RTFM!! (Read The F&^#ing Manual! lol) As well, with Ubuntu especially, but with linux as a whole, there are great communities where you can ask a question or find the answers you need...:D

As for software, for linux there are usually different programs that replace windows versions... Photoshop is replaced by the GIMP, IE by Firefox, AIM (and msn and IRC and ICQ and Yahoo!) by GAIM, and many more... See this link for a more in depth list of equivalent replacement programs..

well i ordered the pressed cd, but you can download the iso that is the same thing.

on that site you can order them for free, or download and burn the iso. i recommend the d/l and burn. its faster than the free shipment.

as for running the live version, just boot from the cd like normal. its also the way to install it, but it wont do it automatically so you dont risk your current compys setup.

wifes using the kubuntu on the desktop using the live cd now. lets see how she likes it. . .

Oh yeah - you have to reboot with the CD in the drive to run the live CD :type

I haven't used kubuntu but I have tried other flavors, personally I am a freebsd fan but I'm downloading it to give it a whirl.

^^^ i have never tried freebsd. i should give that a try.

right now tho i want to get install and try OSX86 on my athlon 64 (been trying to get around to that since like january), kubuntu, and vista beta 2. . . my 64 is gonna be gettin a work out!
