I personally have a 12" powerbook g4, but it cost me. (I ended up paying around $2k for it)
For a little more practical, I'd recommend the Sony VAIO PCG series. You'll notice I like small, portable laptops. haha
Anything Centrino should be good. Actually Dell makes some nice thin centrinos at a reasonible price.
Don't expect to get off for under $1k though. You get what you pay for.
I'd suggest finding one you like, and check ebay. I currently own 3 laptops, and bought 2 off them off ebay (not the powerbook).

umm i have to disagree. my friend has an HP and the wireless sucks on it, it has broken like a dozen times. but she got it cheap at like circuit city or some place like that
i would recommned:
Alienware - probably the best graphics/gaming/performace laptop, but it will cost you a pretty penny.
Sony - one of the best, almost as good as alienware, better if you like small laptops
Dell - good, durable, reliable, and decently priced
(i have one older model for presentations, but it works like a charm)
Apple - the notebooks are great from what i know, and now with the new OS, Tiger, which looks amazing i would consider that too, but they are costly too.

I read the cnet user review about HP/Compaq laptop and most of the comment are nagative one.So far it's ok for me.Being using for 4 mts..My previous laptop is a compaq which is good too.My dad is using it.It's being 3 years and the compaq laptop runs fine.
If you need performance, Powerbook. Don't be afraid to give up size for $$ - the other benefit is compact and light! I love the Powerbook 12, it will be my choice when I go mobile Powerbook 12 is awesome, but the iBooks are a performance value if the Linux idea is too limited

i am waiting for my laptop... i just ordered it as a grad present! woo
i am getting a dell m700 (i think that is what it is called)
it looks like its going to be sick... i upgraded a few things.
its very portable too.
the only bad thing i have heard about it is the graphics card... i guess if you play the latest and greatest video games, it wont handle like a gaming pc... i dont care about that though... i dont even play video games...
its screen looks sick.. its a reflective screen and the overall display looks like its going to be amazing..i searched google and some guy did a review on his...
i am still waiting for it...but once i get it i can let oyu know how i like it.
stay away from sony. their computers blow. trust me. I use a gateway 4520GZ. its designed to be thin and light. it weighs 5.5 pounds and is an inch thin, so I carry it everywhere (every day at school). it also has Centrino, so I can get 5 hours+ out of a battery, depending on settings and use. that also means I have wireless internet, which totally kicks ass. I think it cost about $1300-$1500.
