New computer am thinking of getting

I will second the dell support. The dell i used to have blew up the 2nd day i had it (bad hd), and the next day someone was out fixing it, never had any problems after that.

I've heard good things about the XPS's. I read a nice article about them in this month's issue of Forbes.

I personally despise HP's.

I worked at a computer repair place for a while a few years back (top salesman for over a year, hah), and in the support area in the back, it was literally half hp's or compaq's (same company now, hp bought compaq). They are cheap quality machines imo.

I saw a slightly faster processor on the xps 400, i would say they are comparable but the xps does not have as much ram.

The XPS is good (Laptop or Desktop), especially for gaming. (Don't know how much you do)...but most gaming computers are for speed and good pixels on the computer screen.

But, I'd stay away from AMD. Pentium is much much better.

And the G5 start at $2,000 for the CPU only.

Laptops
The Apple Powerbook for $1500 is good. Don't know the "about" price.
Dell Inspiron 9300 is good too.

You could get a cheap model and trick it out with memory or whatever else you wanted to do with it.

By customize...I meant

Getting a lower model, such as the Demension E510, E310...I wouldn't go any lower than that.

But, that's Dell as an example for a Desktop.

It also depends on what you want. A desktop at home...or a laptop where you can take it to school and have it at home....mobility.

I have a Gateway 310S, it's the low model, but I upgraded the memory and the video card, to play games online. Gateway remodeled their products.

But, you can get a lower model and have fun with the customization with what you want and don't want.

Or with the XPS basic package...that's good enough or better than non-customization. If you want to compare specs between Dell, Gateway, or Apple.

When do you have to have this new computer by?
Usually Christmas...is a good time when computers go on sale.
