Ouch!, Got a pop-up virus...need advice, probably getting new system too.
So My faithful Toshiba Satelllite 5305-703^^^ of like 3-4 yrs (Pentium 4 @ 2.0 Mhz, 512 Ram, 40 Gig, XP Prof.) has gotten a nasty pop-up virus called bloodhound. Which basically pops up casino game ads and has frozen my internet toolbar.
I forgot to update my Norton that expired so I think that is how I got it. Anyway it's slowing my system down...
And I'm contemplating if I should try to clean it. If so what should I do in terms of buying virus software?
Or getting a new computer Desktop Tower? I'm looking at Dell XPS 200 system ($1,109) . I just need the tower. Because I already got a keyboard, mouse and 20inch HDTV/Flat Panel Samsung monitor.
Dell System (just need the tower).
or maybe I'll get another laptop and plug it into my configuration. I was looking at the IBM T42 series ($1500).
The point is I need something...but I haven't bought a computer in 4 years. What do ya'll reccomend for a guy that wants a small package with lots of power?
second of all, its not that old and unless you are gonna do some really intense stuff on it,which i assume you arent because thats not in your field, i would just clean it up, just try formatting the hard drive and reinstalling
oh btw, should this be in geek chat?

lol. I don't know any geeks outside my field. or geek forums.
thanks though...the reason i want a new system is that 2.0 ghz is really slow. since i'm on the net downloading large doses of HW and reading assignments as of late.
plus the Toshiba overheats...because Pent 4 at 2.0 ghz is almost boiling point for laptops.
cool, I'll check the norton site...most sites charge you for that though...so I was hesitant.
Yeah my Toshiba is really great. But it does get hot what I like about it is the fan blows outwards (and not inwards like other laptops) so the inside doesn't get dusty but the heat from inside blows out and makes my room hot sometimes

Depending on what version of Norton u have, u can download this config (or whatever) file that tricks Norton into thinking it is registered for free updates and what not until the year 2999. ...Not that I condone any of that.
If you want a new computer thats small and powerful, I suppose you could look into a Shuttle system if you want the 'cubie' tower. I haven't had any personal experience with them, but my friend has one and she likes it a lot.
