I know we have talked about this before, but it is just as important as it ever was. we may have won the last battle, but the war rages on.
i saw this picture, and it just made me instantly ticked off, so i figured id share
it is still important that we tell our crooked politicians that net neutrality is important.
companies like vz, time warner and comcast piss me off. and dont get me started on verizon bitching and whining over the open standards placed on the auction for the 700mhz band. all these companies want to do is maintain a monopoly, no matter how much it hurts the consumer.
Net neutrality is basically keeping the internet the way it is now. Right now, large telecoms like comcast, verizon, time warner, etc are pushing tiered internet, meaning they decide what internet traffic they allow on their networks. It makes it so they can push their content, and deny competitors and also making it so that sites have to pay these telecoms to allow their traffic. like the picture shows, the tiers will only allow access to certain things. basically, the large telecoms want to create an internet monopoly and make decisions for you on what you area can see.
what makes it worse is that these telecoms have deep enough wallets to put our crooked politicians in their corners unless we really speak up. you can help by telling your congressperson that you are for net neutrality.
its basically a big freedom issue that most people have never heard of.
yeah, there are a lot of people who would throw a shit fit, but not too many people know about net neutrality or the first to keep it that way. Its rarely even on the news or in media, because guess what? they control that shit too.
the main reason that as many people know about it today is because of the efforts of folks in the know such as us and more because of sites like savetheinternet.com, etc.

Kind of scary...
But honestly there would be just huge upheaval from something like this.
Well not like the cell phone companies don't already do it...
^^^ well the cell phone thing is coming to be a new problem.
Because of all the frequencies that are being freed up, early next year there is going to be a bid for the 700Mhz spectrum. Google has rumored intentions to the bid and they suggested that the FCC put in some rules for use of spectrum to the winner. these are basically open standards that allow more freedom to customers and other who offer services. these were open devices, open applications, open access and something else (i forget).
the FCC approved two in their entirety, and a little bit of another and guess who has a problem with it? verizon. verizon has suing the FCC for removal of these requirements.
basically it boils down to the fact that verizon wants to monopolize the spectrum and make the decisions for you as to what applications and devices you are allowed to use. additionally, they do not want to allow fair and reasonable access to the spectrum to those that can offer competitive services.
im so sick of large telecoms. and guess what? to have broadband where i live i have to choose between the two companies i despise most, verizon, and comcast.
