Lack of Z3 turbo information? - United Bimmer Community

I'm looking into getting a Z3 and I'm finding myself very surprised at the absolute lack of info in turbocharging Z3's. There is no shortage of turbo information on the M52B28, which is most likely the motor I would be working with, but that is only for the E36s. Is there a reason no one turbos their Z3?

My questions are:
Where can I find a turbo manifold that will fit in the Z3? (this is what I'm imagining is the reason why no one does this)
Where can you find clutches capable of the increased torque?
And what kind of power can the transmissions stand up to?

Currently I drive a 1984 Porsche 944, and as much as I love it and would like to just buy a 944 Turbo I just can't afford to maintain a 26 year old car and make 400hp or so. On the porsche forums there is no shortage of people trying all kinds of things like engine/transmission swaps, twin scroll turbos, various tuning methods and the list goes on. I realize that there is a huge community for the e30/36/46 turbo conversion, but what is the deal with z3 turbos? Is there a reason no one does this? Or am I just looking in all the wrong places?

To the OP: if your Z3 has the M52 engine then most parts will be compatible. The biggest issue is lack of engine space. I'm not too familiar with the Z3 particularly. Check to see which transmission you have. When you find the model of tranny you can find a clutch that will fit. If its the same tranny found in an E36 then you may have an easier time searching for a clutch that is compatible with that model tranny.

Most E36 trannsmissions can handle the increased strain. Their are numerous E36s running Forced Induction. I haven't heard of a transmission failing due to the increase but I'm sure it is possible. With proper maintenance you should be fine.

Now, if you haven't already a good idea could be taking a look at www.realoem.com. They have a number of parts diagrams available that may help you to visualize the spacing. Try ECS Tunning as they seem to carry a good selection of turbo related components.
