What I can't figure out is on the Technical Data part of the link, a car with an automatic transmission that's 66 lbs. heavier than one with a manual gets a tad better fuel economy in the city (21 v. 20), and the same on the highway (30 v. 30). Just doesn't add up in my book .

EPA is full of shit?

I was talking to my neighbor, who works for lexus, he tells me the EPA is revamping the MPG estimate procedures because they are not realistic for most "economy" cars..like civics and some of the new hybrids. So...maybe they screwed up here also?

Oh for sure, the EPA testing methodology led to fuel economy readings that were on the order of 30% optimistic (probably due to lobbying from the auto industry, and Congress' self-delusion, to think that vehicles were meeting CAFE standards and thus avoiding penalties), and I believe they are being revamped to portray more realistic figures. But still, if tested under the same conditions, I would have expected the lighter, manual-equipped car to have been on the order of 1-3 mpg better than the auto in both city and highway mileage ratings.
