Ticking noise - United Bimmer Community

hi everyone. i'm new in this forum and i hope someone can give me some advise re: my problem with my 325i '06 model. bought this car last July '06 nad was very happy with the performance of this car until a couple of months later. i started noticing some ticking noise in the engine. i thought it was just because of the engine being cold because it usually happens when i first start the car in the morning and usually goes away after awhile. but it became more often and sometimes continues even after driving for awhile. i took it to the dealer, and they said they didn't hear anything so it must be nothing serious. last month my friend heard the ticking noise and told me it's not normal, and for me to have it check again because it sounds like a lifter is knocking. took it back again to the dealer which is about 1 1/2 hr away and when i got there and after they checked it, they said they didn't hear anything again. told them that maybe i'll just drop it off a night before so they can just start it an the morning so maybe they can hear it then, but the guy said that it's just normal. is it normal for this car to have that ticking noise? has anybody experienced this kind of problem in their car? thank you in advance.

When was last oil change/ oil service? It sounds (no pun) like a sticking lifter if it happens cold. It could be alot of things but start with an oil change and please avoid the local "quicky lube" places. They are notorious for using wrong grades or mixing up the actual correct weights, brands, etc...

yea its the oil.

my car will start to tick 4k after an oil change in the AM when cold . If i change the oil it goes away.

as far as your car bing new and doing this...idk.

thanks for your reply. well, the oil hasn't been changed yet because it is still new(only has 6k miles) and not scheduled for it. sometimes the ticking noise is there even the engine is warm.

If you can get it to reproduce consistently, you take it in with the noise present and take the service guy for a ride and point it out to them. Just an option and something that should be helpful if you can replicate it for them. I know my dad would do that with his when there was a problem and they said no way, so if he could make it do it he would make the service guy go for a drive with him so they can witness it.

That's 6 months ago - Oil service is 7500 miles but a regular oil change should be done somewhere inbetween (every 3-3500 miles)

well, this car's recommended oil change is 12,000 or 1 yr now. not like the older models that is needed to be change every 3mo or 3500 mile.

If you read the fine print that's "oil service" every 12k, they still recomend a change inbetween "oil services". Oil loses its' detergents in roughly 3k miles (for non-synthets) and 6k miles (for syns). It still lubricates, but it loses its' cleaning abilities at roughly those mileage points. Read your owners manual or contact your dealers' service dept. for clarification.

they also say you shouldnt have to change your transmission oil..ever.

Hey buddy. I recently did take my 06 330i to the shop for some small problems and they gave me a 06 325 loaner car and yes i did hear that ticking noise and again i was loaned a 07 328 and it also made that ticking noise.....So i think it might be normal but my 06 330i does not make a ticking noise weird ha......sorry rob

get the oil changed my freind, make sure the service centre you are using has got the reccomended oil for your car, as stated above the oil needs to be changed at least every 6k, and make sure they use genuine bmw filters.

I would suggest have the dealer give you a copy of the repair order. also get a copy of the history of when they checked the previous time. This will protect you from any warranty issues.
The dealer will then be responsible to the situation. If you are low on oil, it will cause a ticking noise. I've seen some BMW's with under 10K miles needing up to 2 qrts oil.

Just my thoughts..
