i had the SAME problem with my Passenger door.
i had to replace the Door Latch mechanism. (note the door cable only links the interior handle to the latch)
my old Latch seemed okay, and only had about 1.5mm more "play then the new BMW part. & i could have probably fiddled it to work.
but considering the amount of Labour time it took me,
i just replaced the part. (£90)
(i had to take the Airbag & window out to get better access to the latch)
But my car had 150kMiles when i had the problem!
Temporarily, you can open the windows by holding the unlock button on your key, then stick your hand inside, so u dont have to look silly climbing over the seats etc.
i replaced my door catch for the same reason
