Just bought a BMW to use as my daily driver. After driving the car for 10 days I understand the slogan, "The Ultimate Driving Machine".
I bought the car at my Porsche dealership and "assumed" (I know) they had changed the oil..wrong. From what I can determine the oil in the car has approximately 13,000 miles on it!! It will go in Monday for proper service.
I can't believe how anyone would put this many miles on their oil. My Porsches oil is changed @ 4000 miles or six months, religiously.

Thanks for having me on the board.
Doc
Welcome aboard, Doc! Can't believe anyone would neglect to service their oil after that much mileage. Any car, let alone a BMW.
After servicing though, you'll probably noticed immediately how much more smoother and, quieter your car is. Again, all the best and welcome!

I will post pics if and when I get my camera fixed/replaced. The GT3 is Blk/Blk/Blk with factory painted black wheels...kinda stealth looking. I love it
Thanks for the prompt replies guys.
The oil is dark brown. The car supposedly had only one owner before I ran across it. Now I'm really concerned about what kind of service history it has had. Its disgusting to treat any car that way.
Do you drivers think its okay to use Mobil 1 5-40 in my BMW?
Welcome Doc. Mobil 1 or any good (brand name)synthetic would be a good choice. I'm a Castrol freak because of years of consistency (Mobil has a noteriety of changing to appeal to buyers tastes) But both stand behind their products. RE: prior owner neglect - alot of leasees and 1st time owners tend to overlook the maintenance using warranty as a crutch, so it's not surprising. It sounds like it's got a good home now...

Well, just so you know, BMW (reguarding thier E46 line of vehicles) recommends 15,000 mi intervals between Oil Service intervals. Now granted, that is a long time, however, they can go that long, I wouldn't do it as far as a preventative maintenence aspect, but at 13,000 mi, I wouldn't be as alarmed. I would, however, get it done. I personally would change it every 5,000 to 7,500mi. Just my opinion of course.
