Insurance recovery. Getting a key.
When you walk into the dealership and ask them to copy you a key, do you have to provide them with another one or can they do it by VIN? How much is it?

you can provide them with a VIN, but to prove ownership of the vehicle i think you need two documents of ownership, like a title and something else.. oh its 27 dollars i think(thats for the key w/out the light)

In order to get a new key for your car.
You have to have:
1) the title to the car
2) proof of drivers licence (the person's name on the title has to be present with the valid DL to make sure identification is true)
3) Money to pay for the key
The title has ALL the information, VIN, make, model, color, etc. So...to my knowledge that's all you have to have.
BUT, just a random fact. You can only have a total of 10 keys (including your valet) made.
It varries depending on the make and model. An X5 key was $180. I almost had to buy one. I got lucky. But I'm guessing around $100-$200.
Good luck!

Because that's the maximum amout of keys that BMW will authorize you to make through them.
10 keys for 1 car. That's kinda alot not to mention expensive.
If you lose that much stuff....you need to get a girlfriend.

We just bought our first bimmer, and it only came with one key. I contacted the local dealer and they told me the following:
$198 which includes the key, cutting, and programming.
The key is actually cut somewhere in the southern US, not at our local dealer here in Wisconsin. Programming, however, we can do on our own.
