no it doesn't need to be done by a dealer as long as the sensor is ok. you may have to replace both. i did even though one didn't look worn at all

Did my rear brakes last October-ish. Brake light went out after the install and the single pad sensor was installed on the passenger side caliper. Turned on the power, waited like 15-30secs. Just power, no running engine. It came on at first, but as the computer went through it's check list, the light went out. Didn't need to reset any codes. If your still having a problem, you may want to consider checking to make sure that the sensor is attached correctly. If it's loose, wouldn't it still be considered broken...?
But I just realised that this thread is a few weeks old... so... did you fix it?

yeah, i changed the rear pads and sensor....that did the trick. Thanks
