Studded Snow Tires

Does anyone have a suggestion for a good set of studded snow tires?

After talking to my father-in-law over the weekend, he recommended that I run 4 studded tires on my 323. Has (or does anyone currently) do that?

I need to make a decision pretty quickly as we've got more snow right around the corner...and I'm not looking forward to taking an unplanned slide like I did the other week.

how much weight do you have in your trunk around 100 pounds or a little more? started snowing here today so I put in 3 40lb bags of wood pellets and my car is fine, im running all season tires, I dont know if you have those or summer tires.

yeah, don't buy studded tires, not a good idea and it's a waste of money, 94bmw325i is right...

That's why trucks suck in the snow and the bigger, heavier SUV's kick ass

No weight, at all in the rear.

So there's no improvement in traction with the studs?

Ofcourse your have more traction with sutdded over your summer tires. If you have all season just throw some more weight in your trunk, and dont drive it like its only raining out, just go slower and take your time and you wont spin out.

well i have no idea what brand.. but it doesnt hurt to get studded tires, its better than all seasons, and you can just put weight in the back anyway, and even with all the weight + studded tires, u still gotta drive carefully, but dont you buy a snowtire, any one that supports studs then you have to take it to a shop to have the studs inserted?

I appreciate all the suggestions ...I think I'm going to just go with normal snow tires and do that Xsperf suggests below in the off chance there's not enough grip with the regular snows on.

I'm surprised "studs" are still available. They outlawed them here in Minnesota years ago because they were "grooving" the roads and water/ice would form, expand and destroy the roads & hwys. So instead they destroy cars, lakes & enviornment with salt - go figure.
