intake runner
I had the same thing with my 330i... Turned out that the intake runner, which connects the EGR valve and Intake to the throttle body had a slit in it. It would whistle at about 20% throttle and be quite otherwise. On the 330 it was a tight fit to get it changed, but i could easily feel around for it and feel the cut.

Throttle whistle
Good post. I have the same noise on my z4. I'll check it too. I went over the air filter box really well this past weekend but didn't go beyond that. Thanks.

leakiest hose ever
Thanks, antoniop.
I stuck my hand down in there. Took about a minute to find the problem. Bit of poor engineering. Short, thin, corrigated plastic hose in a hot place. Feels like every crease is now a hole
Off to the Hanes manual to try to ID a part number or even a name.
I was able to access a good bit of this info (parts diagrams and manuals) for my Miata (died last month in a 8 car pile up) on the Internet.
Do you know of any such links for prolific BMW diagrams and parts numbers?

Whistler
Here's the link to my specs.
<http://www.realoem.com/bmw/select.do?vin=LR64059&kind=P&arch=0>
I've been using the same site to spec out parts. Looks like it's a small hose made as a branching unit off the large hose in this diagram . . .
<http://www.realoem.com/bmw/partgrp.do?model=BT33&mospid=47798&hg=11&fg=45>
BUT this picture doesn't show the 3 inch long, 1 inch diameter piece branching off. Nor does it show the part number for the larger piece the leaker appears to be a component of.
All this sits smack directly under the 'adjuster unit' shown as #7 in this diagram
<http://www.realoem.com/bmw/showparts.do?model=BT33&mospid=47798&btnr=11_2879& hg=11&fg=40>
I'm going to cruise the internet for better diagrams of this assembly. Right now, the hose is wrapped in duct tape (red, matching my dipstick). Took two tries, but I think I have all the holes blocked. I was picking up Code P0171 (or 0117, can't remember which) on the OBDS with verbiage indicating it was running lean. I cleared the code, but haven't driven it since I cleared it. We'll see if it whistles and 'pops off' the code with a check engine light tomorrow, when the wife takes the car for detailing. (Do you think I should warn her first?)
Thanks for your help. Do you know of other websites with parts diagrams?

Haven't found a good repair manual for this car yet
Sorry, I don't have any diagrams for you. The guy at the repair counter at my BMW Dealer ship was great, and new exactly what I was talking about. I think it cost < $40.
When you do change it, remove #7 ADJUSTER UNIT from the diagram you posted. I tried with out removing it, but it was just too tight. The ADJUSTER UNIT came out and reinstalled very easily.

OBDII Codes
I also had a code that went a way after replacing the intake runner...I've forgotten what code it was though.

Sounds like you are talking about #6 on this digram (or p/n 13541435627 otherwise :-). Is that the right one?

z4 whistler
Yup, except mine is a E85. Same site doesn't show the appendix looking thing sticking out to side where the #7 line points.
I'm still running on the duct tape, which leaks a little under light throttle. It kind of sounds like a turbo.
I'm not worried about it, since it's not popping any OBD2 codes. (More concerned about my 'chattering dash', see another post.)
Also, my son's getting married next month, leaving for Iraq the month after. It's going to be a shitty fall. I'll save the distraction for later, when I'm really in the dumps.
