One daughter has a '97 328 with a 5 speed that gets about 24 mpg commuting to work and 30 mpg on the open freeway driving the length of California back and forth to college at 75 mph on Interstate 5.
The other daughter has a '97 328 with an automatic that gets about 22 mpg commuting to work and 26 mpg on the open freeway driving the length of California back and forth to college at 75 mph on Interstate 5.
My wife has an '04 330 automatic that gets about 28 mpg when going to see the girls at college. I am afraid to compute her around-town mileage because she has a lead foot. She sure seems to fill it often!!!!
The best way to determine mileage is a 2-3 tankful average, comparing the volume dispensed at the pump to the miles driven. Don't try it with just one tankful, because you don't top off the tank exactly the same each time. That is why you have to average two or three tankfuls.
The algorithm used by the computer is a bit odd, and does not seem to quite square with reality.

Wow, that's very good mileage. Turbo-diesels FTW!
Mixed city/highway driving, I average about 240 miles to a tank when the light comes on [about 2.5 gallons left, at which point I fill 'er up], which is about 18-19 mpg average. Where I live, there are lots of mountainous bits in the city and the highway, so it's impossible to average anywhere near 30 mpg.
On my New Jersey trip this last Saturday, I hit a record; 325 miles to a tank before the light came on. Almost all highway driving up to about 304 miles and from then on, 50% city / 50% highway. If only I could average this with mixed driving...
And my chip isn't helping either.

Mpg
2003 z4 2.5
First trip was Minneapolis to home, about 1,000 miles, 33 mpg on clear interstate.
Home now and haven't checked it, but suspect it's about 22-27 mpg. It's 14 miles to the office. I avoid the interstate and take the 'back roads'. Top speed is about 50 mph. Last half is about 20 lights but other than that, no stop and go traffic, no 3mph creeping in first gear.

funny that i read this post the other day...
was trying to see just how far i could go before i ran out of fuel - ie when the warning lights on exactly how much is left....
after the trip computer went to ' - - - '
i got a further 25k's of normal driving and one heavy footed squirt
at the moment im averaging about 11 L/100km's around town and on the freeway its gets down to about 7.6l/100km's
