Thats not the gear im in

Hi everyone

I usually dont post in this section due to the fact that that i own an E30 but my father owns a 1999 328i and he has run into a problem that I must ask for your help

the indicator that shows the current position of the transmission is off. for example when i put the car in park it says that its in 2nd gear

this problem is not on the dash by the tach but near the shifter

what has to be done to fix this..

Hmmm, I don't have that indicator on my car. It must be an auto tranny thing. Sounds like there may be a broken piece inside the shifter making it allign unevenly.

Got the same car... though I've never encountered that problem. From my little understanding of the auto tranny selector, it's just a redundant peice of plastic that could've been misaligned or damaged. I know it's been several months since you posted this, any conclusions?

Take the console apart and re-align the gear slector, there is a sliding peice that turns on (or maybe holds the light?) that is under the clear gear selector window. Thats what i remember from taking apart my e34's (same tranny and slector as e36's)

however, this is an e46 he speaks of. then again, being a 1999, it would have the M52. So, your advice could hold true.

I've had that problem too, just replace the plastic piece and it'll be fine.
