E46General discussion and technical help for 1999-2004 3 series cars.
Have had a leak in the power steering. Local shop has replaced many clamps on the hose, but it still leaks. They say if it keeps leaking, they will order a new power steering hose. Anyone have any idea what the problem might be? Or are they even on the right track? Any help would be great. By the way it is a local garage not a BMW service. (No warranty) keeping it cheap! Car is a 2001 330i.

e46's always have leaking p/s hoses. Its usually the hose from the resv-cooler and from resv-pump. Fairly easy job to do, just dont forget to bleed the system afterwards or you will get hard steering. It takes regular ATF fluid.

yea replace the hose if its leaking. Itll get messy otherwise.
Dextron 3 ATF or better.

It's usually the two hoses that Antiburn mentioned. There is one pressure hose (no clamps used) that could be leaking, and since it's under pressure, could lose fluid quickly. Also, the steering rack could leak, which would put fluid into the boots of the rack.
