E46General discussion and technical help for 1999-2004 3 series cars.
Am I crazy for seeing my old e30 318is when I look at pictures of it? Don't get me wrong, I love the new 3 series but it has gotten bigger over the years. This seems like what the 3 series would be now, if they'd maybe stayed more "true" to what the 3 is supposed to be. Also 0-62 in 5.3 seconds
you know i could see that. i also see the Ti in the 1 series.
Man i cant wait for that thing to come out.
and yea i agree E46 3 series is huge. Looks small and nimble...but our cars are pretty dam big length /width wise.
my 2 door e46 is much longer than my 4 door e30.

I give it a month after release before someone's selling a complete package FI kit that replaced the TT with a single, Larger turbo, better cooling setup, and a wicked tune. At which point, BMW will shoot themselves for creating a car thats faster than an E60 M5 without much work done to it.
The speed and nimbeness is also the likely reason why M5 is now getting a Turbo (reportedly) gotta keep the 1, 3 and 5 scaled properly. (BTW, if you didn't knkow, BMW actually came out and said the 135i coupe IS the M1" but wouldn't call it because of the heritage of the M1" Title, thus the M style front fascia despite the abdge.)

You have three choices, stand behind our troops, grab a gun and toe the line with our troops, or stand in front of them, they can use the extra armor.
I remember reading they were also going to start calling the 2 door 3 series the 4 series. At that point they were planning on having an M1, M3, M4, M5, and M6. I spoke to a dealer about it and he told me they decided there was too much history behind the 2 door 3er so they opted not to go with the 4 series names.
I am usually quite conservative with money, but the very first day the 1er comes to my dealership, I will be there test driving a 135i. I have been doing a LOT of research, and it will only be a tad shorter (3 inches) than my current car, it will be a LOT safer (6 air bags vs 2, better traction control, etc), just about the same interior space, and some other stuff.
I was pretty sure I was going to go with an E90, but a 328i at that (because of cost, mainly). Then I thought I would go with a 128i, but then realized how much more you get with the 135i -- not jjust a bigger engine. For one, the M aero kit comes standard (option on the 128i), it comes with 18" M wheels, 6-piston front brakes, and 2-piston rears, sport-tuned suspension, adaptive xenon headlights, all this for what a 328i starts at.
And you know I would get myself a Vishnu kit for Christmas: the mere thought of 400 bhp on that chassis.... can't wait!

FYI, a buddy of mine has a 335i. He upgraded the exhaust and a stand alone ECU with some tuning. It dynoed at 375 whp and 365 ft-lbs of torque. That is at the rear wheel, not crank !! Pretty crazy. BMW detuned the turbos for safety.
I am already day dreaming about 375 whp and -- oh emm gee -- 365 ft-lb at the wheels on that 1er , which will weigh in at about 400lb (and $8k) less than the 335i.
The new Bimmer has a great article about the Hartge 335i, you can really see how much untapped potential is in that engine. It also has a short article on the 135i which spawned my post lol.

that's where i saw it, too. i'm really looking forward to the new 1s. the way it looks right now, if my E30 ever just disemboweled itself and gave out (let's pray not), i might be on my way to a 1...several years from now, that is.
