E46General discussion and technical help for 1999-2004 3 series cars.
I seem to have a recurring problem with the rubber piece that goes around the outside of where the door closes to the car (not sure of exact name). It just naturally seems to want to fall off the vehicle.
I've tried silicone, 3M Weatherstripping Adhesive, and now CrazyGlue. Anyone else have this problem and/or found solutions?
I think my warranty just ran out and i really don't want to deal with the hassle of taking it in right now.
I was thinking maybe this problem is a chronic one for BMWs since the same exact thing happened to my e30....albeit at 115k miles, compared to like 20k on this one
same thing happens to my 330. I pulled off the colored trim piece from the rest of the trim sine I couldn't get the glue to hold it there

So you just got rid of it? You hit the nail on the head once it separates there seems to be a gap underneath it which makes glue/adhesive/3M stuff have a really hard time holding. Having tried all 3 i can say so far CrazyGlue seems to work best if you can get solid contact between the 2 pieces. Although I can imagine the dealer being none too pleased from my efforts if i were to try get it fixed professionally....
tell me if that holds. a week after super glueing it came off again.

I"m going to try one more thing, a classmate of mine clued me in to a thread he found on e46fanatics where multiple people swear by LiquidNails Perfect Glue #1. I'll give that a shot then report back.

Think about it, we are not driving a piece of shit car here, it is the BMW. I am having the damn problem all over every summer. I have to regrue that trim like a maniac. I have tried every possible way and it doesn't seem to hold well.
Who wants to spend $400 for two piece of rubber for the door...? Sounds crazy to me and I think BMW needs to take responsibility for the effects.
it is called the (EDGE PROTECTION RIGHT/LEFT GRAU 1 51717161692 $267.84 )
I have the same issue on mine I'm just forking over the cash and getting the new trim and clips to hold it in its like 180 for the deal but well just need to get it finished cuz its starting to leak and well it well sucks oh well
