Shifter assembly replacement???

Hi! seeking advice:

My 2001 325 has just over 3,000 miles. the steptronic shift lever suddenly was 'catching" going from neutral to drive. My local BMW dealer found the"shifter pin was broken and hitting the stop gate". They filed the stop gate slightly to help the pin move more smoothly- total bill $121.81 . They say I need to replace the shifter assembly, they had to order the part, and it will cost $633.50 to replace.

The shift lever works fine now; the transmission continues to work well. Is the replacement of the shifter assembly truly necessary? I don't want to get stuck someday, but it is working fine now...

Any advice? I have no mechanical background.

Thanks for any advice!

well it should work for a while but eventually it could get stuck, so if it isn't work the 600 to replace then don't.

Do you know a reputable independent mechanic? They're usually cheaper than a BMW dealership as far as labor. For parts, www.pelicanparts.com sells replacement shifter parts for manual transmissions, you may want to call them to see if they have what you need for the steptronic . . they tend to have parts that are not listed in their online catalog.
