E46General discussion and technical help for 1999-2004 3 series cars.
Okay, I made my own custom intake today. I just finished it and I had been working on it on and off all day (had class at 6), and I know what your thinkin' but I can't believe how well it turned out. I'll post pics up tomorrow, it was dark when I finished. I used silicon connectors and 3.5 " pipes, K&N filter, and built a heat shield. Everything is insulated and it is completely cold air. Pics tomorrow.
Edit: I took it for a drive after I finished and I love it. Quiet at 1-3500 RPM (although it kinda hisses) and roars at wot.
Damn . . add some ice, and you could throw beers and sandwiches in there Nice work- you said it roars, is there a noticeable difference in performance?
The gray stuff is silicon wrapped over insulation. I thought insulating the pipe would be a nice touch but then I had a lot left over and just went all out. It actually came out flush with the hood.
The only thing I've noticed is that in first gear since I have an auto ()when I floor it the engine will sometimes bounce off the rev limiter once or twice before it can shift. So either the engine revs faster or my tranny is going to shit.

RSF5- I bought this cheap set up on ebay for about $30. Didn't come with instructions of course. I am of the mindset that the less unnecesary plastic there is the better? Is the heat shield necesary or can I live w/o it for now? Obviously the colder the air the better. Is your filter hose bolted/secured somewhere? I haven't figured out how to lock mine in without building the custom 'house' for it (which i'll probably end up doing).

Yes, without the shield, specially for your style of intake, all you'r doing is getting hot air since humm... the engine is right next to your intake....
So unless if you slap a heat shield.... you might as well not use yours because besides an increase in sound, you'r prob losing "some" power
Umnitza now provides a mechanic to install all parts ordered right in the box! It's their new "Total customer service program" that will eliminate all the haters and keep incompetents from breaking **** and blaming the vendor! When you are all set simply call INS and they will pick him up free of charge.
